Nearsightedness means that you can see things up close better than you can see things far away when you are not wearing glasses or contacts.

One cause of nearsightedness is a cornea (clear front window of the eye) that is too steeply curved. The steep curvature of the cornea causes images to come into focus in front of the retina instead of on the retina.

At the retina, the image is unfocussed and appears blurred. Glasses or contacts help to overcome the limitations of the steeply curved cornea, allowing images to focus more precisely on the retina. This results in clearer vision. LASIK Laser Vision Correction changes the shape of the cornea itself, allowing images to focus more precisely on the retina, even without glasses or contacts.
